Lady Mayor of London Lays Foundation Stone for Central Foundation Girls’ School Sixth Form Expansion
Ceremony marks International Women’s Day and the school’s upcoming 300th anniversary
Central Foundation Girls’ School welcomed the Lady Mayor of London on 12th March for a landmark ceremony to lay the foundation stone for its new Sixth Form expansion. The event celebrated both the school’s long-standing commitment to empowering young women and this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Give to Gain.”
The major development project will increase Sixth Form capacity and enhance learning spaces, adding six new classrooms, upgraded ancillary areas, and redesigned outdoor and rooftop environments. Construction is set for completion this summer, with an official opening planned for September to coincide with the school’s 300th anniversary.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Lady Mayor praised the school’s historic role in widening opportunity for girls across Tower Hamlets:
“For almost 300 years, Central Foundation Girls’ School has been a beacon for opportunity, aspiration, and learning. Today’s laying of this foundation stone marks not just a building expansion, but a renewed commitment to the bright futures of young women across Tower Hamlets.”
Hilary Evenett, Chair of Governors, highlighted the significance of reaching this milestone during International Women’s Day celebrations.
“I am delighted that we have reached this milestone in our exciting expansion of our 6th form building, which will support us in our mission of offering students a challenging academic education complemented by exceptional pastoral support and enrichment opportunities. We are extremely grateful to Central Foundation Schools of London which has made this possible.”
Headteacher Carla Prince reflected on how the expansion aligns with the school’s mission and the global theme of the day.
“This year’s International Women’s Day theme, ‘Give to Gain,’ represents the heart of what we aim to do here at Central Foundation. When we invest in girls’ education, we don’t just transform individual lives, we strengthen entire communities. This expansion will allow even more young women to develop the confidence, skills, and ambition to lead, contribute, and achieve.”
The project responds to growing demand for Sixth Form places, driven by the school’s strong academic outcomes and its reputation for inclusive excellence and pastoral care.
As the foundation stone is laid, Central Foundation Girls’ School marks the beginning of a new chapter, one that builds on nearly three centuries of dedication to educating and empowering young women.
